Frequently Asked Questions!
Are your hip-packs waterproof?
While our hip-packs are made out of waterproof materials, they are not seam-sealed. This means that they perform well in wet and rainy conditions, but should not be submerged during river crossing or tossed in a puddle. While highly water-resistant, they are not waterproof. Our hip-packs made from Dyneema Composite Fabrics (DCF) are the most water-resistant as the seams are taped with mylar tape.
What is the difference in materials?
Dyneema® Composite Fabric (DCF): We use a DCF that is 1.4oz per square yard.
This is the apex of lightweight durability. This type of DCF has twice the mylar lamination and twice the UHMWPE fibers as the next thickness down. The next strongest DCF adds much more weight with only 30 denier nylon. We use this 1.4 oz DCF for the Summit Bum™ - UL and Graham Cracker. DCF is the lightest and most waterproof material we carry, however it is not the most abrasion resistant.
We also make UL wallets and custom orders with a hybrid DCF that is 2.9oz per square yard with a layer of nylon.
X-Pac™: We use VX21 and VX25 fabric for some of the Summit Bum™ - Classic and Simple Bum packs. X-Pac is a nylon laminated waterproof material with Robic fibers laid in an X-pattern.
While X-Pac™ is heavier than DCF, it is much more durable than the 1.4oz DCF and it holds its shape better over time.
Gridstop: We use 210D HDPE Gridstop which is a very strong nylon fabric with a polyurethane coating and high density polyethylene fibers woven into a grid pattern. We use this fabric for some of the Summit Bum™ - Classic, Fast Bum, and Simple Bum packs. Gridstop is durable, light, and exceptionally abrasion resistant

What is the best way to patch my gear?
Use DCF or Mylar tape for all DCF products. Use Tenacious Tape for everything else!
Why didn't my hip-pack come with a standard nylon strap?
If you ordered a Comfy Strap while ordering a hip pack, the Comfy Strap would have replaced the standard strap in your order.
If you would like to receive a standard strap with your order, just let us know your request as well as your order number by emailing email@example.com
Won’t my phone fall out of the open pocket on the Summit Bum™?
In all normal scenarios, no, it will not. If your belt is properly tightened and the main compartment of your pack has a few items in it, everything should sit perfectly fine, like the pockets on your pants! It takes a handstand or leaning over without bending the knees to angle it enough to lose anything.
In testing, we run, jump, and bounce. It takes a very deliberate set of motions to get something like a phone to slip out of the easy-access pocket. So, if you are on a very technical section of trail where your pack may turn upside-down, then you may want to put valuables inside of the zippered compartment!
If you aren’t comfortable with that, send us an email and we can work out putting a button or zipper on the easy-access pocket for you.
Are they called Fanny Packs? Hip Packs? Bum Bags? Chest Packs?
Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes!
Can the packs be machine washed and dried?
Machine washing is not recommended. Detergent can break down the materials in the fabric and the heat from the dry cycle could also cause damage. Washing by hand with a mild soap and water solution and allowing to air dry is the best method.
Can the Comfy Straps be washed and dried?
Although the elastane materials in the fabric would degrade from detergents and the heat from dry cycles, it would be similar to a stretchy waist-band in a pair of shorts or pants.
Synthetic wash and air drying is recommended.
What do most people keep in their fanny pack?
We surveyed 120 Thrupack owners and here is what they said: Survey Results.
